Eletronic & Firmware Engineer 

Prolectric is a pioneer in “intelligent” off-grid solar battery-powered technology, including industrial solar lighting towers, solar hybrid generators, and solar street lights who are part of the FTSE 250 Hill and Smith PLC group in the Roads & Security division.  The business is seeking to appoint an Electronics & Firmware Engineer to join the company’s expanding Product Development team based in Clevedon, near Bristol.

The Product Development team drives innovation within the company, keeping abreast of emerging technologies and delivering cost-effective sustainable products with real-world applications and impact.

The team is looking to expand our in-house skill base within the electronics, firmware & embedded software disciplines.  The role will be varied, and you will gain experience across the whole product development process including project management, prototyping, manufacture, customer support, and fleet performance feeding into continual product improvement.

Initial projects;

  • Designing electronic circuits and PCBs for prototypes and fully developed products in communication and control areas i.e., relay control box, fuel cell control module
  • Writing embedded control firmware for our existing IoT portal ensuring that software is delivered following a robust design, development and validation process
  • Developing new control firmware for an IoT project utilizing CAN bus, Modbus, RS485 & RS232 communication protocols
  • Debugging system firmware for systems in a real-world environment, firmware design of control architectures and interfaces to systems to facilitate debug and analysis
  • Support for the above (day-to-day maintenance, inputs to training, documentation, etc.)
  • Inputs to other development projects, not necessarily software related

Essential programming skills in the first instance include: 

  • Experience in writing C code for microcontrollers, alongside a proven track record of developing, delivering and documenting firmware products, systems and system components
  • Firmware toolchain and supporting development tools including version control and configuration management

Desirable other skills include: 

    • Automated testing
    • Communication protocol knowledge
    • Tools including but not limited to; Autodesk Eagle, Gerbers, Modpoll, git
    • The capability of delivering work packages on time  to commercial and technical requirements
    • Experience in an electro-mechanical product development environment
    • Experience with App development
    • Hands-on experience with tools/practical skills

We anticipate that the successful candidate may be a recent graduate, or graduate with 1-5 years of experience in a relevant field. It is accepted that there may be some ‘learning on the job’ (e.g. of new programming languages). Lighting Installation Operative

Our valued customers include local Authorities, National Housebuilders, government as well as Tier 1 and Tier 2 infrastructure contractors and they are installed on main roads, car parks, pathways and general walkways.  The company has recently been awarded a Queens Award for Enterprise and are holders of a gold CSR accreditation.

Job description

    This principle role is to assist and carry out installations of our Solar street light products.
  • Prepare lighting ready for instalment including programming and assembling as required.
  • Taking goods to site ready for installation.
  • Preparing ground as required including scanning, digging, mixing of cement, and making good.
  • Fixing solar panels and lights ensuring correct set up.
  • Attending sites to trouble shoot resolving issues / breakdowns as required.
  • To tow equipment to / from site as required.

The role will be to assist the Lighting Supervisor to prepare, install and maintain solar street lighting. Based out of our Clevedon depot the team cover the UK.    Should have a strong work ethic, along with a methodical approach.  To assist in the delivery of contracts and maintaining the Company’s standards in relation to Health and Safety procedures.

As a secondary role the person would be expected to tow trailers to/ from site when required.

The Person

The role would require a driven individual with a strong work ethic as the role requires working on site throughout the year and in all weathers. Working as part of a team, the ability to forge close working relations with others is essential.   As part of the customer interface of the Company a smart and tidy appearance with a confident and approachable manner are essential. You should be able to think on your feet and adapt to different circumstances, resolving issues through experience and versatility. A good general background in ground works is required although training on our industry leading equipment will be given.

The individual would be expected to be involved in a continuous improvement program where engineer & customer feedback is sent directly to the product development team to assess the implementation of improvements.

Essential requirements

  • Construction Skills Certification Scheme (CSCS) card
  • Clean current driving license with the ability to tow (B+E/ C+E)
  • To be medically fit to fulfil the duties and responsibilities of the role
  • Must be flexible & be prepared to travel/ stay away as business dictates

The below are desirable but not essential requirements:

  • SSSTS card
  • IPAF
  • Cat Scan qualification
  • Civils’ &/or Rail site experience
  • Personal Track safety (PTS) qualification
  • First aid qualification
  • Asbestos awareness

Job Types: Full-time, Permanent

Salary: £26,000.00-£29,000.00 per year
